Climate Change & Environmental Resilience
Conservation is in my DNA. My father, Brad Northrup, was a conservationist and worked for the Nature Conservancy for almost 40 years. He had a huge influence on me. He cared deeply about the environment and community and being helpful to others. He passed away two years ago, and his death was a real wake up call for me. It spurred me to the decision to run for this office. The causes my father fought for his entire life—environmental conservation, combating climate change, and ensuring that our neighborhoods, buildings, public spaces, and shared resources are protected and preserved—are close to my heart and will be a priority for me as a member of the Assembly.
NY Heat Act -I support the NY Heat Act and support aggressive decarbonization of buildings. This includes shifting towards zero-emission heating solutions. By tightening building energy codes and incentivizing the adoption of energy-efficient technologies, we can significantly reduce our carbon footprint.
Electrifying Public Transit - I support electrifying public transit fleets and establishing a clean fuel standard that makes the dirtiest fuel providers subsidize low- and zero-emission alternatives.
Renewable Energy - I believe New York should be a leader in creating a new generation of green jobs. I fully support the development of offshore wind power and will fight for regulations and incentives that encourage this development. I will also fight to enhance our energy infrastructure to meet and exceed our renewable energy goals, including increasing the state's offshore wind energy production, retiring and replacing fossil fuel capacity with renewable sources, and supporting the expansion and strengthening of New York’s energy transmission grid.
Cap and Invest - I am fully committed to a Cap & Invest program to reduce emissions, invest in green energy solutions, and prioritize investment in projects in low-income communities with high labor standards.
Funding for Environmental Protection - I will advocate for a $400 million Environmental Protection Fund, with aspirations to increase it to $500 million, along with enhanced investments in water quality and bolstering the workforce of environmental agencies.
Community Resilience - I am committed to enhancing our community's resilience and sustainability in the face of climate change. This includes adopting updated coastal erosion hazard maps, fully implementing the Community Risk and Resiliency Act, and supporting nature-based solutions to reduce storm damage. I will push for the integration of green infrastructure in state-funded projects and encourage the adoption of green roofs.
Water Quality - To safeguard New Yorkers’ health, I support the adoption of a statewide timeframe for the removal of lead service lines within ten years, ensuring community involvement and prioritization of at-risk communities.
Toxic Chemicals - I support legislation that mandates the disclosure of toxic chemicals in consumer products and the prohibition of toxic substances like PFAS in specific goods that pose a significant risk to human health. Additionally, I support enhancing the regulation of chemicals in personal care products.
